Luck wasn’t on the side of the Toronto Raptors on Monday for NBA draft tie-breaking procedures, but that’s OK, this was very much the undercard to the truly stressful drawing.
Raptors unlucky as NBA breaks draft order tiesBack to video
That one happens on May 12, when the NBA holds its draft lottery to decide the order of the June 27 draft. Toronto has just a 45.8% chance of retaining its first-round selection, despite going through an awful season, because of a prior trade with San Antonio to acquire Jakob Poeltl. That pick is Top 6 protected both this year and next. Toronto finished with the league’s sixth-worst record, but if one team jumps them at the lottery they will lose the pick, hence the less than 50-50 odds of keeping it (though an optimist would point out the 9% odds of jumping to first and 37% of moving into the Top 4).

On Monday the NBA held tie-breaker draws to decide where a number of teams that finished with the same record would pick. The best-case scenario was the Indiana Pacers winning the right to select 16th overall, but instead the Pacers lost draws to the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic, who each finished 47-35, and got the 19th pick. That selection goes to Toronto as part of the Pascal Siakam trade.
Toronto also got another first this year from that deal, but dealt it for Ochai Agbaji and Kelly Olynyk in a trade with the Utah Jazz. The final pick acquired for Siakam is Indiana’s first in 2026 (Top 4 protected).
The Raptors also own Detroit’s second-round pick this summer, 31st overall.
Also Monday, Charlotte one a tie-breaker for the third-best lottery odds, edging Portland.
