The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have stability in their kicking game again in 2024 after they re-signed veteran American Sergio Castillo on Friday.
The team announced a one-year deal with the 34-year-old kicker.
Castillo became a CFL free agent on Feb. 13, but general manager Kyle Walters said the team was still hoping to sign him.
This will be Castillo’s fourth season in Winnipeg, spread over three different stints. He initially signed with the team in 2015, returned late in 2021 to help the Bombers win their second straight Grey Cup and spent all of last season with the team.
By connecting on 46 of his 51 field goal attempts in 2023, he established a franchise record with a 90.2% success rate.
He went 31-for-31 inside the 40-yard line, was 15-for-20 on attempts outside the 40 and went four-for-six from beyond 50 yards. His season long came from 53 yards out.
Castillo has an 86.7% career average over 77 games, split between the Bombers, Ottawa Redblacks, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks.
